CHALLENGE #5
London Great Swim Challenge (18.07.2015) -  CHALLENGE COMPLETED

THE CHALLENGE

Great Swimming Challengers
Jordan Selig - Lizzie Church - Dan Wingfield - Joe Beddington - Richard Hill - James Sidwell - Simon Gardiner - Nita Patel

I hate swimming, I’m a little scared of it, and I hate being cold, why would I want to do the Great London Swim?

But then I thought, Europe’s biggest open water swim challenge event, it’s in middle of our ‘Summer’ and it’s the most interesting way to see the heart of London!

The challenge is to swim either ½ mile or 1 mile in open water past the O2 Arena, Canary Wharf and the ExCel Centre in London. You can set the pace and the stroke: it’s about taking the swimming cap and armbands somewhere fun and adventurous for a good cause.

For the competitive among us: YES you can treat it like a race and YES I AM competitive.

NAME - Jordan Selig

I’m Jordan and I’m always looking for new and exciting things to do. I fidget and get bored easily.  I got involved with Challenge12 last year for a Tough Mudder event and wanted to really throw myself into it. I have known Andy (Chief) and Katy (Captain) for years and it took little persuading to join them.

I chose TeachFirst as my charity as it is a practical common-sense approach to a huge problem (please see below). I believe actions speak louder than words so last year I supported the charity by writing and releasing ‘The Bristowl’ for free. I followed this up with a Primary school tour to encourage children to love reading. I have also made it free for Challenge12 to use for the educational programme. Why TeachFirst? Quite simply I know how important my education was to me and I am stunned that in a country as affluent and stable as the UK we are still so incapable of providing enriching education to all. I just want to do my bit to change that.

THE CHARITY

TeachFirst

Remember the most inspiring teacher you had at school? Remember the positive impact that their lessons had upon you? Remember the way they helped you grow and develop? Now imagine you had none of that encouragement in or out of the classroom. Would you still be the same person today?

The link between family income and educational success in the UK is stronger than anywhere else in the world. If you’re born into a poor family, you’re likely to study at poorer-quality schools and get a lesser education. 50% of those eligible for free school meals fail to get a single GCSE above a D grade. 3.6 million children live in recognised poverty in the UK. That means 1.8 million children failing to get a single D grade at the (likely) end of their education.

TeachFirst aims to change that, in a practical way. TeachFirst works in the UK to put enthusiastic graduates as teachers into schools in the most deprived communities – where traditionally teachers didn’t want to teach, attainment is low, and the chance of educational success is slim. By doing so they hope to inspire every child to educational success and happiness
